In 1926 Delbert Koerner went to a small airfield in Peoria, IL to learn how to fly. Within a few hours learned to fly a Standard J-1 biplane. He proceeded to purchase the airplane and fly it home to the family farm in Collum IL to teach his brother, Martin, how to fly. The next spring they decided to move their barnstorming operation up to the south side of Kankakee, IL and start a full service airport.
The airport was the place to be back in the day, hosting great Airshows, the Goodyear blimp, and even building a race plane to compete in the 1930 National Air Race in Chicago. They had to work for it, working the great depression, rebuilding everything after a tornado destroyed the airport, and helping out the home front during WWII. The airport continued on, which is a testament to the quality of the work done and the people doing it.
